The mother of St. Augustine, Monica cast him out of her home when he fell away from the Church early in his life.  She prayed to turn Augustine from his dissolute lifestyle. Then a comforting vision, symbolized by the angel at her ear, urged Monica to recall him, and a priest consoled her saying, "The child of those tears shall never perish." Her prayers were truly answered when Augustine came to accept instruction in the faith from Bishop Ambrose.
