Francis and the Animals

St. Francis & the Animals
by Monastery Icons

Once a wolf was terrorizing people in the town of Gubbio. St. Francis went to encounter the wolf, which rushed toward him but stopped as the friar made the Sign of the Cross. St. Francis asked the wolf to make peace with the people, promising forgiveness and freedom from harm in return. The wolf meekly followed St. Francis to the town and lived peaceably among the people thereafter. Prayer cards feature A Blessing of the Animals. Send an E-card with this image

St. Francis of Assisi

St. Francis of Assisi
by Nancy Oliphant

Francis' sanctity was widely confirmed through his virtues as well as numerous miraculous occurrences. Within two years of his death, he was canonized and the construction of a large basilica was begun in Assisi. The background of this icon replicates a fresco in the richly decorated Basilica of St. Francis. Rains damaged the fresco, which was repaired with plaster. Within the basilica are housed the remains of St. Francis, beloved son of the Church. Prayer cards feature the Prayer for Peace. Send an E-card with this image

Saint Francis of Assisi

St. Francis of Assisi
by Terrance Nelson

In this icon as in his life, St. Francis bears the wounds of Christ. The crucified Christ appears as He did when Francis received the stigmata. Francis holds a church reminiscent of the Porziuncola, the famed center of Francis’ movement. The animals at Francis’ feet honor his love of nature, and the wilderness suggests those places that Francis frequented for prayer. The flowing river that pierces the wilderness symbolizes the importance of Divine Grace to the world. Prayer cards feature the Prayer for Peace. Send an E-card with this image
