Narrative: The hands of this Hopi Virgin Mother join with the gentle reach of her son in expressing the prophetic pain of human love and separation. Theirs is a canon destiny--the return of the gift received.
Both the mother’s mantle and child’s shirt are richly embroidered with traditional Hopi design and symbol. She wears a multi-layered bead necklace; and her ceremonial moccasins rubbed with kaolin take on the seasoned patina of an old adobe wall. The child sits barefoot on a Moquin pattern serape. Shawled in a particular Hopi child’s fabric, he appears prophetically rabbinic.
Traditional iconography gives witness to the human face of the Sacred. This icon, imaged in the features of America’s indigenous peoples, reveals anew that sacred power. It celebrates the soul of the Native American as the original spiritual presence on this continent, and as a prophetic sign, it celebrates the reconciliation of the spiritual vision of Native and Christian peoples of this land.
