Narrative: Julian of Norwich was born in 1342. Little is known about her early life. When she reached her early thirties she became so sick that she was given last rites. During her illness she experienced 16 visions or “showings.” After recovering from her illness, Julian became a recluse living in a small room off St. Julian’s church in Norwich, England and was believed to enjoy the companionship of a cat.
She spent most of her time meditating and praying about her visions, which she detailed in her well known book Revelations of Divine Love. The remainder of her time was spent listenening to and counseling to anyone who sought her ear.
The words on her scroll in this icon, “Wytt it wele, loue was His menyng,” translate to, “Know it well, love was His meaning.”
