Narrative: This shrine pictures a stack of brightly wrapped Christmas gifts topped by the most important gift of all, the Incarnate Savior of the world. All the elements in this shrine echo the inscription, seen as strings of cards tacked to a green wooden cabinet. A singing angel hovers over the Holy Family. Joseph stands resting his right hand on Mary’s shoulder in a protective gesture. Seated on a bed of straw, Mary gladly reaches out her hands to us and offers her newborn Son to the world. Baby Jesus stretches His arms wide, embracing the world, which also reminds us of His crucifixion.
The donkey and cow indicate that even the simplest and humblest of the animals recognized the Savior. The Holy Spirit, a bright red decorated bird, sings of Joy while the Magi tend their camels. The bright star is seen in the night sky. The ground speaks of the countryside. An attentive shepherd guards his sheep. The little town of Bethlehem, colored toy blocks, is seen in the distance. Finally, a sprig of holly portends the Passion; the red berries and sharp leaves intimate Christ’s blood and future suffering.
