Christmas Card Greeting: This standard greeting is printed on the inside right panel of Christmas Cards. Have a happy and holy Christmas!
Narrative: This narrative is printed on the back of each Christmas card. This icon depicts the scenes of Christ’s Nativity. The focus of this classic presentation is the Virgin Mother and her Child within the Cave of Bethlehem. Mary gazes in adoration upon the Son of God and directs her attention towards Him with her left hand. The Greek letters near her halo proclaim that she is Meter Theou, the Mother of God. The Child Jesus is wrapped in bands of cloth, as described in the Gospel of St. Luke (2:7, 12). The Greek letters in the crib are the abbreviation for “Jesus Christ.” The ox and ass are present in the cave, as they are present in nearly every Nativity scene, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 1:3. In the lower left sits a distressed St. Joseph. He is being confronted by the devil disguised as an old shepherd, who is trying to persuade Joseph that a virgin birth is not possible. In the lower right are two women washing the Child. These are midwives brought to attend Mary.
The wise men from the East bearing gifts are as described in Matthew 2:1-12. The angels bringing “good news of great joy” to shepherds tending their flocks are as described in Luke 2:8-14. The Star of Bethlehem as described in Matthew 2:9 directs a ray of Divine Light upon the Child through a hole in the sphere of Heaven.
