Narrative:
This icon is based upon the beginning of the Gospel of John. Christ is imaged as Word made flesh – God incarnate. He is human, yet divine – a child, yet filled with wisdom – wrapped in swaddling clothes, yet draped in royal glory.

The small cross in Christ's hand, held as the scepter of a great king, symbolizes his eventual death and way of salvation. He is given honor by all, from stable animals to heavenly angels. He is adored by family, shepherds and the visiting Magi as Lord of Creation.
