Narrative: Born into wealth, Peregrine Laziosi lived comfortably in his youth. He involved himself in politics, initially opposing the Papacy. During one uprising, this opposition led Peregrine to strike the papal peace mediator, St. Philip Benizi. When St. Philip forgave him with compassion, he repented and converted to Catholicism. After receiving a vision from Our Lady, Peregrine joined the Servites. He eventually came to lead a Servite house near his birthplace of Forli in Italy. There, Peregrine became known for his fervent preaching and gentle guidance in the confessional. Later, while suffering the pain of cancer, he placed himself unconditionally in the hands of our Lord. After receiving a vision of Christ on the Cross reaching out to touch Peregrine’s impaired limb, he was miraculously cured. This faithful servant was canonized in 1726, and is the patron of those with cancer, AIDS and other devastating diseases.
In this icon, Peregrine receives the gift of healing. With the hand of God intervening to cure, St. Peregrine’s wound bears the transfigured power of the Resurrection symbolized in the eight pointed star.
Prayer
Card:
Prayer to St. Peregrine Patron Saint of Cancer Patients O great St. Peregrine, you have been called “The Mighty” and “The Wonder Worker” because of the numerous miracles which you have obtained from God for those who have turned to you in their need. For so many years you bore in your own flesh this cancerous disease that destroys the very fiber of our being. You turned to God when the power of man could do no more, and you were favored with the vision of Jesus coming down from His Cross to heal your affliction. Ask of God and Our Lady, the cure of these sick persons whom we entrust to you.
Mention their names here.
Aided in this way by your powerful intercession, we shall sing to God, now and for all eternity, a song of gratitude for His great goodness and mercy. Amen.
