These children, brother and sister, together with their cousin Lucia, were favored with three appearances by an angel and six apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary in 1917. At Fatima, in Portugal, Our Lady imparted three secrets to the children. The first secret involved a vision of hell and, to save the souls of sinners from hell, a request to establish devotion to her Immaculate Heart. The second secret foretold the end of World War I as well as the suffering to occur during both World War II and the period before the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart. The nature of the third secret, as recorded by Lucia, has never been publicly revealed but is understood to be known to the Papacy.
First Francisco and then Jacinta died during the worldwide influenza epidemic. Our Lady had told the children that they would go to Heaven, leaving Lucia to establish devotion to her Immaculate Heart. Lucia later became a Carmelite nun.
The icon depicts the children in prayer, holding the rosaries that Our Lady requested to be prayed daily for peace and the conversion of the world. The icon portrays Our Lady as she appeared to the children, as well as relics of the children. The beatification of Francisco and Jacinta gives universal affirmation to the events at Fatima, the holiness of the children and the relevance of Our Lady’s message for all times.
