Narrative: Depicting the Virgin of Mt. Sinai, Our Lady of the Sign expresses the ancient anthem, “In the bush seen by Moses, as burning yet unconsumed, we recognize the preservation of your glorious virginity, O Mother of God!” as well as the prophecy of Isaiah, “... the Lord himself shall give you a sign; behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son.” (Isaiah 7:14)

In this present rendition, commissioned by a Roman Catholic priest to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of his ordination, the Virgin is surrounded by fiery seraphim, representing the Divinity manifested in the Burning Bush.

The Virgin personifies the Church who contains within herself the living God, as represented by Christ Emmanuel in the mandorla upon her breast. Christ is shown in the vestments of a priest, holding the Eucharist. The Virgin’s hands are on fire with flames representing the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Surrounding the nimbus of the Virgin are 15 stars representing the mysteries of the rosary. The three diamonds on the crown of Our Lady represent the Holy Trinity. The three differing stars upon the Virgin’s clothing are the signs of her perpetual virginity.

The seraph at the base of the Christ child honors the Madonna as the the fiery chariot of the Word.

God of life,

by the resurrection of your Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ.
Through the prayers of his mother,
the Virgin Mary,
bring us to the happiness of eternal life.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
